Local Rotarian shares his “Common Sense” approach for Immigration Reform

Buckner Advocates Strict Enforcement of Criminal Charges for Businesses Who Hire illegal Immigrants.

VARNVILLE- Immigration reform was the topic of the day at the weekly Hampton County Rotary Club meeting this week.  Dwayne “Duke” Buckner, who is seeking the SC Republican Party’s nomination for the United States Senate, spoke to the club on Monday.  Buckner laid out what he believes is a “common sense approach” to fix immigration.  According to the Pew Research Center, in 2017 there were an estimated 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States.

“I believe the majority of illegal immigrants who come to the United States come here to work,” Buckner said. “However, there are a few illegal immigrants who come and commit crimes; they shouldn’t be allowed to stay in the country.”

Buckner sees businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants as a major part of the problem.

“How are illegal immigrants able to find jobs and work without having the proper documentation?” Buckner asked. “They are able to do so because businesses hire them even though in some instances the owners know they are illegal.  We need strict enforce of criminal charges against business owners who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.”

That would, according to Buckner, help stem the tide of illegal immigrants coming to the country.

“They wouldn’t come here unless they could work and make money,” said Buckner. “We have to let people know who want to come into our country that immigration is something that we take seriously in the United States and that we mean business. That is why I support the President’s border wall proposal.”

As for the millions of unauthorized immigrants currently living in the country, Buckner believes they should confess that they broke the law by entering or remaining in the country illegally.

“Under my plan, all illegal immigrants would have 60 days to register with the government and pay a fine or risk deportation,” said Buckner.  He proposed that immigrants who registered would be issued a temporary social security number that would allow them to work, get a driver’s license and have FICA taken out of their paychecks, but they would not be U.S. citizens or be able to receive any government benefits until they became a citizen.

“The FICA deductions taken out of their paychecks would not benefit them until they became a U.S. citizen.” said Buckner.  “Instead, the deductions would help to shore up Medicare and Social Security benefits for American citizens and also go towards paying off the national debt.”

Under Buckner’s plan, illegal immigrants would have one year after being given a temporary social security number to apply for citizenship or risk deportation. “Their application for citizenship would be placed behind those individuals who are following the immigration laws.”
